Oasis January Updates

Hello Oasis Residents!  Happy New Year to everyone and we wish you all a prosperous and happy 2014.  Below you will find various community updates.  As always, please feel free to submit any feedback or updated information to the Board through this website.

Board Action
  • Currently the board is working on finalizing the rock spreading throughout the community.  This is something that has about a 15-20 year life cycle and between last year and this year we will finalize the common areas with new rock.  Thanks to our connections on the Board we utilize the Boy Scouts/Sea Cadets who are looking to earn money to fund their various education and learning adventures with one of our Board members overseeing the project.
  • We are currently assessing the block wall that is part of the common area throughout the community.  There are many signs of water damage from the lot owners sides as well as various tree roots that we have tried to control to prevent the walls from breaking down/lifting up.  This has some potential impact on the community so we are taking action to make sure and stay ahead of it.
  • The boat house by the Elliot entrance to the community is getting a facelift as well and expanding to a slightly larger building in order to fit the various items needed for the lake maintenance and seasonal decorations.  We are getting close to approving bids to finalize this work and make the pump house building more functional.
  • Financials of the community are looking strong so we are looking to take proactive approaches to keep our community and our budgets strong for future needs.
Recent Suspicious Activity/Break-Ins
  • Unfortunately, we have had a recent break-in and attempted break in to some homes located on Drake.  Here is the message we received, “This message is to inform you and the Oasis residential community of a burglary that took place during the early afternoon of Thursday 16 January. The homeowners were only absent from the home for approximately 90 minutes, while the burglars entered their home (**** East Drake) through a bedroom window almost certainly after a failed attempt to enter the home next door (**** East Drake). The short timeframe from which this activity took place, including their skill at cutting electrical wires and deactivating the garage doors, indicates that these are experienced individuals who were likely conducting surveillance of homes in the neighborhood vulnerable to forced entry. “
  • We also just recently received this from another homeowner, “Multiple attempt and one successful burglary of home on Drake and Hazelton lanes. Jan 17th. Rang bells, two homes had at least one dog. Successful one did with a brick through the back window butting up to Anozira Parkway.”

This is obviously not something we like to see in the neighborhood.  We did contact the Tempe Police Department and asked them to make more rounds throughout the neighborhood during both daytime and evening hours and they have already started some increased patrol.  As always the residents are the frontline defense against those that are looking to take advantage of others.  Please make sure your house is safe and secure and call the police if you see any suspicious activity.

We really hope we don’t have to post any further updates involving crime/break-ins so lets all work together and keep us informed if you see or hear anything.  Take note of vehicles, unauthorized people, solicitors, etc.

It is my understanding there is to be “NO SOLICITING” in the Oasis. However; for the 17 years I have lived here, there have been hundreds of “cards/fliers” left on my front door and garage.
In years past, I have turned them into our management company, hoping, there would be legal action taken against the violators. To my knowledge, no legal action has ever been taken.
I do believe, we NEED to eliminate unknown people walking on our property ( garage/front doors). Allowing them to continue doing so, is an invitation to more break in’s and robberies.
Many of these people, in fact, could be “testing” to see who is and who is not at home.

Thank you for your comments and you definitely bring to light some very true points about solicitors and the potential tie to crime. There are many forms of solicitors from non-profits, political, community outreach, minor activities (Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Schools), religion, and door to door sales. Although we have a no soliciting sign posted at the entrance of the neighborhood where does that leave us?

I did some research on Tempe City Codes and it is in fact true that this city requires a permit/approval to be able to go door to door for any of the above listed. Where it is a tougher case to crack is how to act on these rules. If you are not home, or do not see the solicitor in anyway and they simply leave a card/flyer/baggie with rocks and a card behind, according to the Tempe Police department, that would be a civil matter that should be submitted or taken up with the better business bureau.

If someone comes to your door you have the right to ask them for their permit and if they do not display one you may call the non-emergency number to the police and potentially have them arrested for trespassing.

If you saw someone driving around in a vehicle throwing out flyers etc you could also call the police and have them investigated for trespassing or littering.

The Management company is not responsible for pursing civl claims against solicitors. What it really comes down to is active participation from the Homeowner’s of the community. Being aware of your surroundings, taking extra precautions for home security, reporting activities to the proper channels, and knowing your neighbors.

Thank you for posting this update on home invasions. For those of us who work from a home-based office, this post is exactly what we as homeowners need to be reminded of our vulnerability. Knowing of these recent burglaries will remind us to stay vigilant for our neighbors. It also explains the increased police presence lately — always welcomed!

You’re very welcome. We are doing what we can to keep the community thriving and getting information out to the masses. This site has proven to be an efficient way to do that as we have many of the homeowners registered to receive updates!
